Hi Gregory, thanks for your comment.

I don't personally know neither Jimmy Wales or Larry Sanger. That being the case, I can only refer to their bios ( Jimmy, Larry) which credit both as co-founders.

I don't think the old Symbian values were that bad either actually - I don't remember them being ridiculed much. Except when the handles fell off the mugs...

We've all had a chance to feed into the process and participate right from day 1 of this initiative. It's been a company-wide collaborative effort. For this reason the values ring true and they feel a natural part of my day-to-day work life.
They do seem radically different to the old Symbian style.

Inept ignorant "Company values" announcements such as the one above are one of the most ridiculed mismanagement initiatives in companies everywhere. Hot air, self importance, outright wrong facts (if any at all) and lots of pump and circumstance.

And no, Symbian is not breaking new ground here at all, the long standing open source projects have all done this before with varying levels of success, occasional team splits ("forks"), "holy wars" etc. etc. That Mr. Warner could not find a good book on the subject is just his own ineptitude. One place to look for relevant books is http://catb.org/~esr/writings/

Yep, that's been made clear in the presentation. Regarding mono, add your vote to this idea.

Damn. Values were one of the most ridiculed managerial initiatives when Symbian Ltd was still a company. I just hope this Foundation initiative is radically different.

Time to remove any reference to .Net and red 5 Labs since they stopped activity as of January 18th.

The foundation might want to try and find a volunteer or a sponsor company to port Mono on Symbian or something like that.

The presentation went really well - thanks very much to the good and interested audience. We gave out some books and developer bootcamp USB sticks.

Those interested in following up, you can find the presentation here (Scribd has issues with fonts, I'm working on sorting this out). A great place to start is Symbian Developer web site and our Wiki where you can find all the content present on the USB stick and much, much more. The original "Hitch Hiker's Guide" booklet can be found here.

BTW, you are right as usual, Michael...

@John
Yes, the first time you install a Qt application that uses the smart installer it will need to download the Qt binaries. However this is a one off cost - for subsequent applications the binaries are already on the phone and don't need to be downloaded again.

Contrast this with the alternative, which is embedding the Qt binaries in your application - in that case the cost is paid every time you download an application, whether or not Qt is already present.

11Mb is 2-3 Mp3 songs. Research (and my experience) shows that people are quite happy to download this sort of amount of data. If they have expensive contracts they will tend to do so through a wifi or via their PC connection rather than through the contract. What the smart installer does is ensure that this is a one off cost.

In future, even this will be less necessary, because Qt will be in ROM.

Regards
