I’m Kyoko Horikawa, Communications Manager in the Symbian Japan office.

As you may know, Japan is a leader in mobile phone technology and Japanese mobile phones have a wide range of high tech capabilities that allow you to do a lot on the go: email your friends, browse the internet, take high res photos, listen to your favourite music, watch TV using the “One Segment” broadcasting TV technology, use the electronic wallet feature to pay for items without carrying cash or cards, measure how far you’ve walked with pedometers, and so on. The Art of Community by Jono Bacon

Hi, I’m Sebastian Brannstrom, Release Manager here at Symbian. Some time back I stumbled across a book called “The Art of Community” by Jono Bacon. It turns out that this book and I have a bit of common history.

A few years ago I discovered podcasting, this fantastic medium where everyone can make their own radio show and broadcast it to the world. It turned out to have a lasting effect on me. Firstly, because I still today listen to hours of podcasts every week. Secondly, because I found myself having to write my own open source podcasting application for Symbian. This led to a long chain of events that would eventually find me living here in London, working for the now open source Symbian Foundation.

As a Linux user, one of my favourite podcasts was “LugRadio”. It was produced by a group of Linux geeks in the UK, among them Jono Bacon. Calling all apps for Symbian Horizon

Do you have a Symbian app? Have you submitted it yet to the Horizon program?

Just a couple of weeks after SEE 2009 and the launch of the Symbian Horizon beta site the Horizon Team is already working hard on processing more applications into the Directory Program and evaluating applications for the Publishing Program. We look forward to working with everyone in our community of application developers.

How can you participate in the Symbian Horizon program?

Option 1 - All developers can have their Symbian Signed applications appear in the Symbian Horizon Directory free of charge. The goal of the directory is to provide a complete guide to every Symbian Signed application, as well as where they can be downloaded or purchased. The directory is live in beta we are encouraging developers to submit other applications that have already been signed here.

Option 2 - The Symbian Horizon publisher program will begin to increase the number of applications processed through Symbian Signed and submitted to application store partners over the next few months. In addition to the first group of 50 applications, another 50 applications will be processed through the review and signing process and submitted to all participating stores at no cost to the developer. A comprehensive program designed to process thousands of applications will be launched in 2010. You can apply for the publishing program here.

The Symbian Horizon program will be continually evolving – please don’t hesitate to send us your ideas for the program.
