How will mobile change your future?

An eclectic mix of 150 creative and free thinking people including a Tibetan lama, mobile marketeers, projection designers, architects, luxury car manufacturers, the grammys and a quirky girl band all got together to answer the single question, ‘How will mobile change your future?’ The answers were inspired by puzzles, beards and ukuleles, among other things, and came out of an intensive two and a half day programme bursting with top speakers, “Open Space” discussions, “Future Cubes” ideation sessions and fireside chats. This gathering took place in a Schloss, in the “Bermuda Triangle of Germany”, at the MLOVE ConFestival.

MLOVE is a conference by day and a festival by night which means 18+ hours of non-stop activity each day. You may think it sounds tiring but actually it was more inspiring and exciting than I could ever imagine. Two of the minds behind MLOVE, Harald Neidhardt and Peter Giblin, took us on a journey into the future of mobile where we were asked over and over again to discuss how we thought mobile would change our future. This may sound repetitive but in fact it was highly effective. A lot of thought and effort went into a programme that was informative, interactive and a lot of fun. The passion and vision of these two men prevailed in every little detail. Read more »

A year of Symbian World goodies

More great goodies are now available for download. The top goodie for this month is the first installment of a wallpaper calendar which brings the Symbian World to your desktop every day of the year. It’s a little late but hopefully it’s worth it.

The illustrations have changed a bit in style since the first iteration of the Symbian World. This is primarily because we have a new hand, Anna Alfut, creating futuristic land-scapes, sea-scapes and space-scapes. Anna, has created these “scapes” by combining many of the favourite characters from the original World, some of her own creatures and illustrations the community have contributed – so keep them coming. Branded wallpapers for phones & desktops

Things are hotting up at the Symbian Foundation. There’s a good buzz around the building and one can see the creativity and feel the energy of a new company. It’s a great environment to set our new brand free. The brand is developing nicely too and is slowly filtering out into the world. If you saw David Wood’s posting, you may not have realised, on first glance, that you were peaking into the new ‘Symbian world’ – take another look through the doorway…

If you’d like to see more of the Symbian world then be sure to download your Symbian branded wallpapers for phones and desktops now. Fair enough! This world may be a bit too busy as a wallpaper but you may find something in there that tickles your fancy.

A brand that gives you the freedom to create

We’ve taken some big steps towards launching the new brand with more to see at CTIA this week. Things have been developing nicely so I thought I’d take a breather from the brand launch plan to share some thoughts on what the new Symbian is all about.

The new Symbian is all about a passion for openness and about the freedom to create. It stands for collaboration, for community, for humanity. For making things better! For all things ‘open’.

It is a brand that’s human and playful and friendly, where you feel the human hand. A brand that enables you to discover unlimited creative possibilities, that wants to share and talk A brand that’s fun, that isn’t fixed, but free to constantly evolve. A brand that’s owned by all the people that create and build with Symbian. A brand that celebrates new ideas and creativity in all forms. A brand that’s truly alive and refreshingly different, because it is! A brand that’s human to the core and that underneath beats a human heart.

We’d very much like for everyone within our community to be a part of our brand and help us to develop it. We welcome all creative ideas and thoughts.Symbian heart

Developing a brand

Since August 2008, there has been a team fully immersed in creating the Symbian Foundation brand. We were a few recruits from Symbian (Patricia Correa, Thibaut Rouffineau and myself) plus S60 representatives (Esa Eerola, Minna Karvonen and Olli Sotka). You may already have seen a sneak preview of brand elements at Mobile World Congress but we’ve got a whole lot more to show over the next few weeks as we develop, refine and make a final choice on the exact tone of yellow – all the fun bits!

That’s not to say that it has all be fun. We had just three months to work on a brand strategy for the foundation. This involved some flying back and forth for intensive all day meetings and many long weeks but we delivered in time and with big smiles on our faces, because at first it had seemed impossible, impossible! In December, our team was joined by the experts at Landor, a first-class global brand agency (they created the BP ‘flower’), and together, we brought the Symbian Foundation brand to life.

So far we have had a lot of interest in the brand – it was a big talking point for us at Mobile World Congress, words like fresh, unconventional, human and playful were at the tips of the tongues of our critics. As I mentioned, there’s a lot more to come – take a look at this…Pat might just have a cult following after this home video masterpiece about a phone with a heart!
