Truecaller, the developer story

My name is Alan Mamedi and I´m the co-founder of True Software Scandinavia AB together with my colleague and friend Nami Zarringhalam. Our main product in our portfolio is TrueCaller which is a mobile caller ID that reveals the identity (name and address) of incoming unknown phone numbers, before you answer. When the phone rings and the phone number isn´t in your phone book, the caller’s identity is displayed next to the number.

TrueCaller has evolved from a simple caller ID application to something more. The caller ID is still the main function but it also has a big role for other integrations such as our Twitter integration that automatically updates your Twitter when you´re on the phone with someone, or our Update Phonebook-feature that updates your phonebook with missing information such as street, city and zip code automatically. More unique features are coming in our next version of TrueCaller, 1.30 and it will be released in the end of February to all Symbian S60 platforms.

The application is available for mobile phones based on Android, Windows Mobile as well as Symbian Series 60 platforms and it is available in 25+ countries including USA and Canada. A light version with contact update functionality and manual reverse lookups is also available for iPhone.
Our goal and vision from the start has been to develop a caller ID application that works worldwide. If you are in US and receive a call from France TrueCaller should still be able to detect who the caller is, and this is possible today with TrueCaller.

We started to develop the application for Windows Mobile and before the launch we decided to also develop a client for Symbian because it´s the largest operating system on the market today and also because I´m a big fan of it.

One of our most important platforms for TrueCaller is Symbian and the reason is that many APIs are available for our purpose and also because the potential to reach worldwide is much bigger. My biggest interest in Symbian has been the big supply of applications and also because the main features are working so well – such as calendar, e-mail client, profiles etc. I believe, and have experienced, that these basic main features are not as good on other platforms.

These functions have always been well implemented and straight forward on Symbian platforms, that is why I believe that Symbian will keep its market position.

I´m a big fan of Nokia E-series and all my E-series have always worked perfectly out-of-box. The OS has always been very stable and also reliable and that is a big factor in my opinion.

Before we launched TrueCaller on the market we had very good communication with users on different Symbian-communities to get their opinions and feedback about the product to make it as good as possible. Many Symbian-communities have a lot of members who are eager to try new applications and using their response has been a huge success.

When we officially released TrueCaller we worked a lot with different social Medias such as bloggers, Twitter, Facebook and so on to reach out to the world. By communicating with popular bloggers such as Dailymobile.se it has given us very viral results because other bloggers who read their blogs has also written about TrueCaller. People who liked the blog post tweeted about it on Twitter and it just continued to live it´s own life on the Internet.

An important marketing channel for us has been different application stores such as OVI-store and GetJAR. My experience with OVI has been very good. In the beginning when Nokia launched the OVI publisher tool it was pretty complicated but it has become much more user-friend lately and OVI is today one of our largest marketing channels.

Our goal now is to support all countries and become an application that users don’t want to be without.
For us Symbian is a very important platform and we at TrueCaller are really looking forward to the new Symbian^3/^4 and will start working on supporting them as soon as the SDK will be available.

If you haven’t tried TrueCaller yet then download it today! It´s free in most countries and you can get it from Truecaller.com directly from your phone.

Best regards
Alan Mamedi
