The Phone That Sinks Android?

Via TechCrunch the Google Phone:

So Steve (Jobs) must have upset Eric (Schmidt). The Google phone is coming in January says TechCrunch it will be an HTC and TechCrunch claims it will be branded Google. It will be unlocked – so no beneficial operator deal.

Or is it a phone for all Google’s engineers to test Android – meaning it’s an inhouse testing tool that will never go on sale?

TechCrunch and Techcrunch spinoffs got the web-wires buzzing about it over the weekend with hundreds of retweets and comments, suggesting, if nothing else, that the US tech industry is now more firmly mobile than PC focused.

Silicon Valley Insider carried the story Saturday:

Google plans to sell an Android phone made by HTC next year direct to consumers, the WSJ is the latest to report.

GIGAOM weighed in too:

TechCrunch says the “new” phone will go on sale in January.  The WSJ says it will be called Nexus One.  The Silicon Valley Insider suggests it will be sold direct to customers. What will OHA members have to say about all that? Is this the Phone that sinks Android or the OHA?
