SMobile Systems issued a press release the other day, with the headline “one in 63 smartphones infected by mobile spyware and malware”. Unfortunately this headline is misleading and has caused a lot of inaccurate reports and hype, namely on Twitter. Normally we wouldn’t bother responding to most mobile malware studies and press releases but we couldn’t help it with this one, it was just too easy to take a part. More importantly, consumers deserve an explanation so they don’t worry about their favourite device. If I could spin like this I’d probably be more a lot more popular. Colleague Craig Heath posted a brief explanation on the Symbian Security Blog. Bill Ray does a good job too.

Hello i just bought a nokia 5800 phone with symbian os the only problem is that only a few day into operation and the os is already hanging!!!
John,
It’s not possible to diagnose the issue with your particular handset on this blog. Millions of owners of the Nokia 5800 are using it fine, without the hangs that you are experiencing. I suggest that you take it back to the retailer.
(In my view, there’s virtually zero chance that the issue is related with “mobile malware”, so this discussion is out-of-place here.)

I just bought a Nokia 5800 and i download apps, should i be worried about malware and viruses? i don’t want a huge pile of bills come to my home because of a ”paycall virus” or having my mobile phone system screwed up… But i bought this phone for all the fun it has, now i have to be worried about malware…FOR PHONES…
And to John: all OS phones get slow after some uses, they r like computers…
Hi Someone,
The Nokia 5800, like all other recent Symbian phones, has an excellent track record of not being impacted by malware and viruses.
No applications can be installed onto the phone without the user being aware of it, and approving it.
The only guideline that users should follow is to avoid installing apps from “warez” and similar sites, where the origins of the software are unknown. You may get more than you expect (in the bad sense) from such a site.
The design goal of the Symbian Platform is that users should never need to reset their devices – they should NOT become slower and slower with more use. From the symptoms described by John, I think there must be a fault with his particular handset.
