As the first device to launch since the inception of the Symbian Foundation, the Samsung i8910 HD was always going to be special for us. It’s for this reason that we are proud to sponsor the Samsung Innovation Quest (aka Samsung IQ) in conjunction with Samsung Mobile Innovator. This year it is bigger than ever, with cash prizes for first, second and third place.
- First prize – £15,000
- Second prize – £8,000
- Third prize – £5,000
For 2009, it’s all about widgets on the home screen of the i8910 HD using Samsung Mobile Widget technology. Samsung Mobile Widgets are WebKit based and follow the W3C draft standard for widget packaging. They can be docked in the Touch Wiz UI widget tray for easy home screen launch.
New to widgets
Widgets are becoming increasingly important in the mobile context and Samsung IQ is the perfect way to get familiar them. Plus, in the spirit of openness, the terms and conditions of the competition are non-exclusive and all intellectual property remains with you. Full details and entry submission is at www.samsungiq.com.
The team at Samsung Mobile Innovator have provided a range of resources to help you get started, so why wait.
All widgets must be submitted by Friday 14th August 2009, so get started today.

ARRRGGHHH!!! Where is the “seach” function on the new blog layout? Am I blind or just blind?
PS. I am looking for the blog entry where you guys explained why updating the OS version is not quite as easy as everyone (you know, the real experts.. ) seems to think on Howardforums etc.
The money prizes for this Samsung competition are pretty high. I really hope to see some capable developers flocking to present cool widget solutions.
The i8910 HD is a trendsetter for sure!
Hi Viipottaja,
I’m sorry that there’s no search function here. But as a workaround, you can type the following search string into google.com:
This finds this page. A search on that page leads on in turn to the following comment on the HowardForum (authored by me):
great zarquon! has this blog been taken over by innocent smoothie!
Hi Viipottaja. You’re right, as with the previous layout, there’s no search function. However, we’re currently working on the next version (to be available next week), and this does include search.
search function coming soon!!
The Samsung contest looks cool. Hopefully it will inspire some interesting widgets (perhaps something that goes beyond being yet another glorified RSS front end
)
As for the site re-design, I like that too. There are a few teething troubles though. One is the lack of search but it looks like that will be fixed soon. The other thing I’d like back is displaying the author name below the post title. This page here for example doesn’t say who wrote the piece on the Samsung IQ Quest.
David, thanks! The responsiveness of you guys (including you big guys of SF) is impressive to say the least! I am sure once you get more and more into the daily grind of implementation you may need to give up on some of that, but in any case: I’m impressed and keep up the good work and working spirit!
I’ve been using/playing with quite a number of iPhone apps lately and I’m confident that many fancy apps in Apple’s armamentarium can be easily done cross-platform with web widgets.
As long as an application uses the Internet to fetch information and has some access to local APIs it can be done as a widget. Only games or network-mute applications are out of luck.
Let’s see: weather, stocks, currency exchange, microblogging, mail, browsing specific information (ie, this blog!)… these are just few examples. As browser technology becomes more powerful, fewer apps won’t have a widget equivalent.
Will this Samsung competition bring us new paradigms? My hopes are high for the first three winners…
Good initiative from Samsung. It will be fun to see what kind of widgets people come up with. I assume they will also work on other Symbian devices?
